Do you sometimes lack this?
Motivation and drive is something which is so important as a business owner or freelancer.
You need these attributes to stay on your game, to grow your business, and to take it to the next level.
However, we can all lack this from time to time, and wonder if it’s time to give it all up.
Before you do anything of the kind, I’ve created a series of tips and tricks to help you get your motivation and drive back into your mentality, which can help you keep on the right track to success.
It’s so important that you have motivation as an entrepreneur, business owner or freelancer, so let me share some valuable tips to help you get your motivation back!
It’s said that music can drastically impact your mood, your creativity and your motivation.
Not only can it affect the tempo of your current activity, it can drastically change your personality and mood for the better.
I listen to music everyday, as I can’t just sit at the computer, illustrate for clients, or write blog posts without it, but everyone is different of course.
“Research on the effects of music during exercise has been done for years. In 1911, an American researcher, Leonard Ayres, found that cyclists pedaled faster while listening to music than they did in silence.” (Life Hacker)
If this is the case with exercising, not only does this drastically impact your exercise routine for the better, it should also affect your daily working habits and business life too.
But what do I mean?
Even if you’re not a big music fan, a piece of music can drastically effect how you work and motivate yourself.
If you’re lacking that drive and determination to get something done with your business, consider listening to music.
It can lift your mood and completely change your perspective on the current situation, depending on the music that you listen to.
And if you still want some encouragement to turn up those speakers, according to Buffer Blog, after participants listened to a short piece of music, they were likely to match their expression with what they heard, either happy or sad.
This is pretty outstanding, as it tells us that music and the brain is so important, that lifts your mood.
So if you’re ever lacking that drive, determination or motivation, see if music can help, it might have unexpected results.
I’m currently listening to ‘Marriage (Star Slinger Remix)‘, whilst I type this very sentence!
Getting An Outside Perspective
Throughout my creative freelance career, which I’ve been doing for the last year or so, I’ve always been told to look beyond my creative field of illustration, and look at other forms of art to inspire me.
We can become narrow minded with our own industry, field, or niche, and not look beyond this.
We get so caught up by what we’re doing, that we don’t give anything else a chance.
But if this is so important within art and the creative spectrum, why shouldn’t it apply to business and small businesses too?
Well, it should.
If you’re lacking that inspiration and motivation to do the things that need doing, make sure you take yourself out of your industry or niche to help you gain some valuable inspiration.
For example, if you own a website design company, but your also interested in blogging, then you might consider attending a blogging conference.
As you’ve completely taken yourself out of the world of website design, it can help spark some inspiration, which you might of lacked before.
Not only is this beneficial to you and your motivation, your taking yourself away from the things that you’re doing day in day out, which allows you to switch off completely.
You can then feed this new found passion into your business, as you might start a blog on your website for example.
Other examples might be hobbies, sport, exercise, interests, and passions.
The main idea here is to take yourself away from the things that you daily.
Think about Your Goals & What You’re Trying To Achieve
What are your business and personal goals?
What are you working towards?
If you’re lacking that motivation and drive to turn your small business into a complete success, it’s a good idea for you to look at your goals.
You may have a passion for being your own boss, making lots of money, or to become an authority figure, but if you’re struggling to find inspiration to do some work, make sure you look at your business and personal goals.
This can help you keep your focus, and make you want to work hard for your business.
I always suggest that you have your personal and business goals in front of where you work, so you can keep motivated and driven on a daily basis.
You can see what you’re working towards, whilst ticking things off your list that you’ve completed.
Make it fun, make it challenging, and always remember to stick to your goals, as it’s there for a reason!
Sort Out Your Current Environment
It’s important to clear your current environment by making it a place where you want to work and inspire yourself to get things done.
A clean environment equals a clean mind and work ethic.
This increases your chance of being inspired, motivated and driven to get on with work, and keep your focus. Resulting in you running a more successful business.
You may think that you love being in a really messy, cluttered work space, and this is how you work effectively, but it can really impact your work.
“Researches at the University of Minnesota decided to take a look at a long-established principle of human honesty and productivity — keep your work area clean and you will be more likely to work your tail off, stay honest, be generous with your coworkers” (ABC News).
Your working environment has to be a place where you can work effectively, and a place where you want to work.
Make sure your environment matches this, which can drastically improve your motivation.
