Do you want to force yourself out of your comfort zone?
Are you afraid of uncomfortable situations, even though it’ll improve your business?
From public speaking, networking at an important event, or starting your own training course, stepping out of your comfort zone is so important to help you develop your skill’s, push you as an individual, and ultimately help your business in the long run.
In this blog post, you’ll learn how to get yourself out of your comfort zone, learn why it’s so important to grow your business, and discover how to partake in these ‘uncomfortable’ situations’.
Why Is It So Important?
Unfortunately for me and you, these uncomfortable situations are often very beneficial to our businesses.
We can sit around all day, hide behind our computers, and not see anyone else if we wanted to.
That may sound fantastic or hideous to you, but it’s crucial that you step outside your comfort zone, and challenge yourself in one way or another.
“Simply, your comfort zone is a behavioural space where your activities and behaviours fit a routine and pattern that minimizes stress and risk. It provides a state of mental security. You benefit in obvious ways: regular happiness, low anxiety, and reduced stress” (Lifehacker)
From picking up the phone to someone important, going to a conference without knowing anyone there, or speaking to a large audience, these situations are there to test us, and make us grow as individuals.
But there’s also another great reason to force yourself out of your comfort zone – it opens us up to new opportunities, lets you discover what you’re great at, and gives you the confidence to do it again in the future.
By stepping out of your comfort zone, you can improve your abilities, and also evolve your business too.
So how can you step out of your comfort zone?
Always Think Of The Positive
Even though you may not want to do this particular activity, from speaking on stage, attending a daunting networking event, to speaking on a popular podcast, always think why it’s beneficial to you.
Is this going to grow your business, and help yourself grow?
You need to be 100% honest with yourself here, as we can tell ourselves not to do a certain activity, even though it’s beneficial to your business.
As most of the time, that answer is going to be yes.
These situations push ourselves out of our comfort zones for a reason, there there to test us and make us stronger.
If you ever feel that you’re questioning whether to do something or not, because you’re scared, fearful or nervous, always think if it’s going to grow and develop your business further.
Talk To A Friend, Colleague Or Family Member
If you’re really stressed about stepping out of your comfort zone, make sure you talk to a close friend, work colleague or family member, and express your concern.
These individuals can offer great support and encouragement, that puts you at ease, and makes you step out of your comfort zone.
Certain individuals might have gone through the exact same experience as you, so they can offer their first hand knowledge.
But there’s also another added benefit to telling the people around you – it hold’s yourself accountable.
If you decide to not follow through, you’ll not only let yourself down, but more importantly, you’ll let someone else down too.
This puts added pressure on you to follow through, gives yourself motivation and drive to follow through, which leaves you with no choice but to step out of your comfort zone – which is exactly what we want.
Discuss your concerns and anxieties with a close friend, a family member or one of your colleagues, who can offer support, encouragement, which in turn, makes you accountable.
Forcing Yourself To Confront It, Head On!
Is your mind still telling you not to do a certain activity?
Even though, deep down, it’s highly beneficial?
Well, you’ve just got to force yourself to do it, and mute that voice in your head.
In order for you to tackle this uncomfortable situation head on, you just need to dive in the deep end, and see how you come out of it.
You may think that’s a crazy thing to do, but in essence, it isn’t.
Whenever you try and get yourself out of your comfort zone, your mind tells you not to, to remain safe and secure by not doing so.
By forcing yourself to do it, it doesn’t give your mental side a chance to change your plans for you, you just tell it to shut up, and you force yourself out of it.
And Finally, It’s Not As Scary As You Make Out!
It’s said that we fear public speakings over any other fear (source: Psychnology Today), which is astounding!
We put a great deal of emphasis on how negative a situation will play out, imagine ourselves falling over, looking stupid in front of others, but in reality, it’s not the case.
Taking yourself out of your comfort zone isn’t as scary as you make out, and make sure you keep telling yourself that.
It’s just not worth the worry, as there’s lots of other important things to worry about.
And the great thing is, once you do this certain ‘comfortable situation’, it’ll be much easier next time, as you’ll build your confidence, get to grips with it, and learn form it too.
It’s all about practise, and if you practise something for a long period of time, you get used to it, so it’s not as scary as you first made out.
Sure, you might get nervous from time to time, even with hours of practise, but with your experience, you’ll know how to control it, and use it to your advantage.
Remember, it’s never as bad as you make out.
