Do you market for your business?
Want to discover some marketing mistakes that you need to avoid?
Marketing and business can be very rewarding for many of us, but it’s common to encounter obstacles along the way.
Even though encountering mistakes is essential to your growth, you need to discover what mistakes to avoid, so you can save time and money in the long run.
Within this blog post you’ll discover some mistakes in marketing and how you can avoid them. Some of these mistakes are from personal experience, so I know exactly how to deal with them and turn them into a success for you.
Not Writing A Marketing Plan
One of my biggest mistakes is to not writing a marketing plan.
A plan can help you market towards your audience correctly, help you know if you’re on the right track, and help smooth out any marketing mistakes along the way.
A marketing plan can help you considerably, from;
- Knowing the budget you’ve got to play with
- What you’re going to post on social media, email or blog
- Gives you the knowledge of who makes up your ideal customer
- Entrusts confidence in your abilities
I can’t stress enough how important a marketing plan is, so you can see if you’re marketing is going to work.
Even if you’re strapped for time, you may create a plan that’s only a couple of pages long, but this is much better for your business and marketing growth.
Spreading Yourself Too Thin
When you first start out with marketing, you might be tempted to focus on as many different marketing avenues as possible. From online, email to offline, and everything in between, there’s so many different options to choose.
This can result in having too many eggs in one basket and not knowing where to draw your attention towards. I highly recommend you build a solid base on a couple of marketing platforms (say Twitter, Linkedin and offline marketing), and then adding to this list.
It’s a very good idea to state this in your marketing plan, and describe the platforms you’re going to concentrate on, and when you’re going to add to the list.
It’s said that you need to be everywhere to be seen in today’s climate, but gradually adding to this is more beneficial to you in the long run.
Not Knowing Your Target Market
I touched on this aspect previously, but one big marketing mistake that I’ve discovered is not knowing who your target audience is.
When I first started out I didn’t have a clue who my target audience was, and generally marketed towards those who I thought I should target.
This not only delivered poor results, the marketing that I sent out wasn’t correct for the audience.
Make sure that you know who your target market is, and who makes up your perfect customer. Ask them on social media, interview them through email, and get as much detail about your audience as possible. Here’s a few ideas of the types of questions you can gather;
- Their age, their interests and what makes up their lives
- What do they really want and crave at the moment?
- Their sex, their job, and where are they based?
Getting as much information out them as possible is key here, so you can work out how to market towards these people successfully.
It’s also a good idea to write 3-5 customer personas, as there’s many different types of customers that your business can have. Writing one customer persona doesn’t quite cut it.
Not Building Your Email List
One of the best (and most often free) aspects of online marketing is email. There’s many great pieces of free software out there to help build your list and send effective marketing material.
But one major problem is not building your list in the first place, something which I have also fallen victim of. To ensure that email marketing works for you, you need to start building your list.
Have opt-in forms on your website, make sure it’s visible around the key parts of your pages, and have a free giveaway to entice users to subscribe.
One of the most successful ways to achieve this is with your own blog. Here you can create content, help build your SEO, and at the same time build your email list.
But how? Well as bloggers are seen as people with influence and authority, users want to subscribe to discover their latest content. They want more tips to help their lifes, that you can tap into. So if you have your own blog, you can encourage others to subscribe and build your email list!
Avoid These Crucial Marketing Mistakes
